I mentioned over on my BOM page that I would give out awards to my Bigot of the Month. I’ve updated the page to include the criteria for winning my “coveted award.” But here is the winner (and conversation) for March, 2007.
Me: “So has GPA shut off the power to GPSS?”
BOM: “No, not yet, but we’re bracing for it.”
Me: “Yunno, in the end we end up suffering for this mess.”
BOM: “Well, not really us, but the school children.”
Me: “Yes, mainly the school children and the public in general.”
BOM: “I don’t mean to be prejudice but [DingDingDing: Double points!!!] yunno…these Micronesians really need to help out in the education of their children.”
Me: “I’m sorry?”
BOM: “They need to give back. They just come here and take and take. You know that all of them are using our public assistance.”
Me: “You can’t just make the general assumption that ‘Micronesians’ are the only ones using Guam’s public assistance and are somehow taking away from Guam’s locals!”
BOM: “Oh, yes. It’s true. I have a friend that works over at Public Health and he says that all of them are ‘Micronesians’.”
What kind of cockamamie theory is that???!!! Egh! Mr. BOM-March, please pick up your award as soon as you can get your foot out of your mouth and your head out of your *ss!

I won’t even go there!!!!

I agree with Helen!

@ Helen: Why is that I wonder? This story is just the tip of the iceberg. Poor Eric, he hears ‘em all. Ask him for the rest.
@Tash: Where’s Rodney when I need him to back me up?

I love your BOM stories. They amuse and frustrate me all at the same time.
Next time the “Micronesian” thing comes up again, you should remind the BOM that native Guamanians are “Micronesians” too … does that mean they shouldn’t take advantage of the privileges of ‘their’ island?

@ Mel – I’ve grown up surrounded by BOM stories. I never quite knew what to make of them. Though there are days when I’m really frustrated (after the actual scenario above took place, I was so angry and hurt, I cried), there are also days when the racial blunders are so ridiculous, they’re quite amusing. The BOM stories are my outlets. Thank you for reading.
